Why Human Understanding

Why Human Understanding in the Era of Artificial Intelligence?

Organizations have long invested in disciplines that help them think better, plan better, innovate better, and lead better. Strategic Planning. Organizational Development. Design Thinking. Systems Thinking. Organizational Learning. These disciplines have become essential because they strengthen how organizations make decisions and create value.

Yet there is one capability that has received remarkably little attention: the ability to deeply understand the people an organization exists to serve. Organizations collect more information than ever before, but information alone does not create understanding. Knowing what people do is different from understanding why they do it, what they hope to achieve, and what truly matters to them.

I believe the next great organizational discipline and competency is Human Understanding.

Human Understanding is an emerging organizational discipline and competency dedicated to helping organizations better understand the people they serve—and to apply that understanding to make better decisions, build stronger relationships, create richer experiences, and strengthen communities.

It doesn’t replace strategy, leadership, or innovation. It makes each of them more effective because it begins with a deeper understanding of the people organizations exist to serve.

Before organizations can develop strategy, design experiences, or lead change, they must first understand the people they serve.

Why Human Understanding Matters in the Era of Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is transforming how organizations process information, automate decisions, and generate insights. These capabilities will continue to reshape every industry.

But while Artificial Intelligence can process information, it cannot replace an organization’s responsibility to understand the people it serves.

As AI becomes an increasingly common interface between organizations and people, the need for Human Understanding will only grow. Organizations must continue to understand the goals, motivations, aspirations, and mental models of the people behind every interaction.

The future belongs to organizations that develop both capabilities—Artificial Intelligence to process information, and Human Understanding to understand people.
